Background:

 

Alan was the managing partner of Purser Dooley Cockburn Smith LLP and practiced commercial law in both Toronto and Barrie for 34 years. His practice focused on commercial and residential real estate, corporate law and wills and estate administration. He acted as corporate solicitor for over 250 active businesses in Simcoe County. He was also recognized by the Law Society of Upper Canada as a specialist is Corporate and Commercial Law.

Throughout his career Alan developed an expertise in the area of alternative dispute resolution. In recognition of the importance to businesses and individuals to settle conflict as quickly, inexpensively and harmoniously as possible, Alan completed advanced courses in the use of mediation and arbitration. In addition to certification from both the University of Windsor Law School and the Arbitration and Mediation Institute of Ontario, he completed the Harvard Law School Advanced Mediation Program and possesses an LL.M. in Alternative Dispute Resolution from Osgoode Hall Law School. He acted both as a Mediator and Arbitrator and was a member of The Arbitration and Mediation Institute of Ontario and a member of the Simcoe County Alternative Dispute Resolution Association.  

Alan also has experience in the design and implementation of conflict management systems in both unionized and non-unionized settings. Alan worked with his clients to develop conflict management systems to reduce or eliminate disputes in the workplace. A conflict management system establishes the policies and procedures to govern internal conflicts and ensure that all disputes are handled fairly and properly.

Prior to his retirement, Alan was very active in community affairs having served as President of the Barrie Rotary Club, founding chairman of the Georgian College Foundation, and President of both the Barrie Family Y and Big Brothers of Barrie. He has also served as President of the Barrie Country Club and as a director of the Georgian College Foundation Capital Fundraising Campaign.

Alan now lives in Victoria and enjoys his time as an avid golfer, cyclist and traveling in pursuit of these hobbies.
